Today, I shuffled a five-and-a-half hour playlist as I drove to my home in Pennsylvania, my friend in the passenger seat - my collaborator in adding songs.
An hour or two in - or maybe longer, I can't remember now - we heard the beginning of "Don't Look Back in Anger" by Oasis. It's one of those songs that I'd usually forget about until I hear it every now and again. Now, though, I associate it with a particular day from this past fall, so I spoke up with the memory.
"Whenever I hear this song, I think of that day we went the corn maze and listened to this song on the way home," I started. I was brought back to October, sitting in the car with three of my friends, and it was perfect outside: warm enough, not too warm, a breeze, falling leaves. My favorite time of year, my favorite type of day.
"When you dropped me off and drove away, I could hear you three singing the chorus through the open windows, and it made me so happy," I continued.
"That was one of the best days," they said, and I kept driving.
